In the eastern burial ritual, there are many rules and etiquettes that must be followed. When creating this work, I realized that a burial is not simply performed for the dead, but it is also for the deceased’s living acquaintances. Therefore, a burial is not only about how people face the dead, but also about how the society as a whole deals with the dead. Even more so, it is about how to face the reality that everyone will eventually fade. The portrait of the deceased within my work has been swapped with a mirror. Hence, participating in the work was similar to engaging in your own burial ritual. It was as if I was perceiving another’s death, but also reflecting my own. This has created a constant loop of going back and forth.
